The injury cast a pall over the snapping of South Carolina's two-game losing streak. The Gamecocks (7-2, 5-2 Southeastern) have beaten the Volunteers three games in a row for the first time.
The Volunteers (3-5, 0-5) drove to the Gamecocks' 19 with 1:08 to go before losing a fumble.
The calls in Knoxville, Tenn., for coach Derek Dooley to be fired are sure to grow louder.
"Well, that was another tough
finish," Dooley said.
Poor timing: Nine seconds. No timeouts. Kick the tying field goal and go to overtime, or try for the win outright by running one more play? No. 23 Ohio had a big decision to end its first game as a ranked team since 1968.
The Bobcats went for it and lost.
Tyler Tettleton lost track of his team's timeouts and held onto the ball too long, getting sacked to preserve Miami of Ohio's 23-20 upset of its Mid-American Conference rivalry in Oxford, Ohio.
"We wanted to win it right there," Ohio coach Frank Solich said. "Nine seconds is plenty of time to get one more play off, knowing that it's a throw. Either the guy is there or he's not there, and if he's not there then you line up for a field goal on the last play."
Tettleton didn't realize Ohio (7-1) had no timeouts left. Then, when he took the snap and saw his receiver covered, he lost track of the clock, too.
"I just totally forgot," Tettleton said. "That's my fault."
Rutgers tripped up: The No. 18 Scarlet Knights (7-1) fell from the ranks of the undefeated as Kent State defensive end Mark Fackler returned his second interception 25 yards for a touchdown, and the Golden Flashes (7-1) forced five other turnovers in a 35-23 victory in Piscataway, N.J.
Kent State had been 0-22 against ranked teams before Saturday.
Michigan QB hurt: Wolverines quarterback Denard Robinson left the game late in the first half with a right elbow injury and spent the second half on the sideline in an overcoat as freshman backup Russell Bellomy threw three interceptions in No. 20 Michigan's 23-9 loss to Nebraska in Lincoln, Neb.
The Huskers (6-2, 3-1) moved into a first-place tie with Michigan (5-3, 3-1) in the Big Ten Legends Division but own the tiebreaker.
Robinson has accounted for two-thirds of Michigan's offensive production this season, and the Wolverines were lost without him. Coach Brady Hoke said Robinson aggravated a nerve injury in his right elbow when he was tackled at the Nebraska 8 late in the first half.
"When he hit it, he hit it the wrong way," said Hoke, who gave no additional details on Robinson's status.
