Is Paul Ryan fit to be president -- the unspoken question at the vice presidential debate


Presidential campaigns are akin to gestational periods, with months of campaigning giving voters time to slowly form their impressions of a candidate.Against that backdrop, Representative Paul Ryan of Wisconsin stepped onto likely his biggest stage yet on Thursday night and showed an American electorate still getting to know the Republican vice presidential nominee that he is no pushover.

Vice-presidential debate will be important



When The New Yorker magazine's cover depicts Mitt Romney debating an "empty chair," borrowing a prop from Clint Eastwood, you know the debate did not go well for Obama.

Debate-watching events were held throughout Redlands and I was pleased to join 25 others at a local restaurant. As a Republican, I was expecting a good showing from our candidate, Mitt Romney, but I didn't predicted the decisive victory he earned.

Presidential debate: Lots of red meat for policy wonks

President Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney after the presidential debate at the University of Denver.Was it the natural tendency of old campaigners to play it safe in the opening quarter? Or the tendency of longtime adversaries to score points off each other rather than illuminate their differences?
Or was it that the issues on which the presidential campaign will turn are so complicated — the economy, taxation, healthcare — that it’s a challenge for anyone to make them accessible for average listeners?

Fifty-two years ago, during the first televised U.S. presidential debate, an ailing Richard Nixon perspired so profusely that it was thought to have played a role in his defeat to John F. Kennedy.
Ever since then, presidential debates have been must-see TV in America, earning their way into political folklore thanks to a legendary zinger, a spectacular gaffe or just an all-round abysmal showing.
