Hot Emmys trends from years past "Old Is Gold"

Every year at the Emmys, stars get out of their limos and float down the red carpet in their best attempt at a Best Dressed List-worthy ensemble. And while TV's finest stars all look glamorous on their own, the wow factor increases when you look at them all together and see a trend emerging before your eyes. We can't
wait to see what the stars will be wearing when they arrive at the Emmy Awards this Sunday. In the meantime, let's take a look back at which hair, jewelry and fashion trends ruled the carpet in years past.

2011: Seeing Red

Hollywood's sexiest ladies broke out in scarlet fever for last year's big show. Kerry Washington (in Zuhair Murad), Nina Dobrev (in Donna Karan) and Kate Winslet (in Elie Saab) each wore this bold color on the carpet. Red hot indeed!

010: Making a Statement

It isn't just gowns that draw attention on the red carpet. Stars' bling can equally make a splash. In 2010, celebs were spotted wearing huge statement jewelry. Our favorite pieces included Heidi Klum's Lorraine Schwartz diamond-and-ruby necklace, Lea Michele's Lorraine Schwartz
platinum-and-multicolored-diamond mesh collar and Julie Benz's Neil Lane diamond bib.

2009: Sexy Shoulders

The asymmetrical gown can be done a number of ways. Take a look at how differently Kim Kardashian, Hayden Panettiere and Chloe Sevigny rocked the trend at the 2009 Emmys. Kim wore a white long-sleeve Ina Soltani gown, Hayden sported a red cap-sleeve J. Mendel number, and Chloe donned a
black-and-white polka-dot one-shoulder Isaac Mizrahi gown. Still, all three fall under the same asymmetrical trend.

2008: Drop It Like It's Hot

Whether they wore their hair up or down, stars were hot on chandelier and drop earrings in 2008. Debra Messing wore a gorgeous pair of Fred Leighton diamond-fan-pendant sparklers, Christina Applegate rocked Lorraine Schwartz amethyst-chandelier danglers, and Kathy Griffin sported Erica Courtney
gold-and-diamond flower-burst earrings with yellow beryl drops.

2007: A Leg Up

With all that time celebs spend working out, it's a shame they spend award season covering their legs up with gowns, right? Maybe that's why in 2007, thigh-high slits were all the rage. Lisa Rinna, Melora Hardin and Jennifer Morrison (in Elie Saab) all sported this sexy trend.

2006: Making Waves

Have you ever noticed that every year Emmy hair seems to have its own trends, too? In 2006, stars eschewed fussy up-'dos and let their luscious locks flow free in waves. Leah Remini wore her hair in a side part with bangs, while Kyra Sedgwick and Evangeline Lilly parted their hair straight down the middle.

2005: Orange You Glad ...

Orange hues don't look good on everyone, but they looked gorgeous on these celebs at the 2005 Emmys. Never one to shy away from color, Mariska Hargitay wore a Carolina Herrera dress, while Portia de Rossi rocked a Nina Ricci gown with double straps and Eva Longoria opted for an Angel Sanchez gown
with sexy cutout and beaded neckline.

2004: Just White

Brides-to-be must have sat up and taken notice while watching the 2004 Emmys, because white was the color to wear on the red carpet that year. Mary Steenburgen's dress featured a plunging neckline and shredded bottom. Meanwhile, Jennifer Aniston wore a gorgeous beaded Chanel column gown, and
Joely Richardson sported a sleek asymmetrical Catherine Walker frock with thigh-high slit.

2003: Purple Reign

All the purple of the red carpet at the 2003 Emmy Awards left us in a fashion haze. Felicity Huffman opted for a multihued halter gown, while Elisha Cuthbert wore an eggplant-colored dress with sweetheart neckline, and Kristin Davis donned a simple satin strapless gown in grape.

2001: Back in Black

Originally scheduled for Sept. 16, 2001, the 2001 Emmy Awards were pushed back as a result of the 9/11 attacks. So when the show finally rolled around on Nov. 4, attendees were asked to wear "dressy
business attire." The result was a lot of stars wearing black suits. Our favorites include Jessica Alba's dress
and blazer, Edie Falco's simple black-on-black attire and Jennifer Garner's maroon shirt and scarf

2000: Pink Ladies

From Melanie Griffith's carnation-colored column dress to Cynthia Nixon's magenta satin gown, the Emmys were full of pink ladies in 2000. But perhaps the most famous lady to rock this pretty color was Sarah Jessica Parker, who wore this feathered ballerina Oscar de la Renta frock, which she called
her "fantasy dress" on the red carpet that year
